Emergency Grants in South Africa to Mitigate the Impact of Covid-19

Hlanganisa Institute for Development in Southern Africa (HIDSA) invites eligible organisations to apply for funding to bolster South Africa’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Through this emergency grants facility, Hlanganisa invites grassroots organisations and interest groups to apply for up to R50 000 to provide essential community-led solutions to support local resilience and community wellbeing during this crisis period.

The fund is available from 6 April 2020 and will remain available until it is exhausted. Grant applications will be processed on a rolling basis.
During this time, Hlanganisa will endeavour to process application within a short period and provide an outcome within 10 working days.

Indicative activities:

  • Provide education and awareness around risk, prevention, early detection, palliative care, management, access to services has to be underscored
  • Use spaza shops, burial societies and other appropriate vehicles to distribute infection control supplies (such as masks, hand sanitizers, sprays) to community members and vulnerable sub populations such as women on the streets
  • Coordinate emergency transportation to designated hospitals for patients whose clinical condition deteriorates – organized through street committees and community health workers.
  • Support organisations offering home based care to the sick, providing the necessary supplies and offer relief accommodation to help with self-isolation in conditions where the home is inadequate
  • Provide education and awareness around risk, prevention, early detection, palliative care, management, access to services has to be underscored
  • Provide alternative access to energy sources such as fire, coal, paraffin (including alternative energy sources such as solar) for food preparation during periods of heightened travel restrictions (lockdown)
  • Engagement with traditional leaders for buy-in and championing the control of outbreak including culture sensitive education around safe and dignified funerals
  • Strengthen the capacity of CBOs and women’s organizations to collect disaggregated data to assess differential impact on women and other sub populations.
